Barriers

These walls, bars and shells we build
Do they keep someone out or us in?
Our bars let through sight and sound
But allow no passage
Our shells such slick security
Can fracture under strain
Our walls are thick and made of stone
To withstand a constant beating
Barriers relentlessly assailed
From where I ask, inside or without?
These walls, bars and shells we build
Are they our fortress or prison?
